Little did I know how that simple gesture would affect my life's journey. By Paul MacFarlane and Bill Grivna. There is an old Chinese proverb concerning the practice of T'ai-Chi, the slow motion martial art and health exercise. While waiting for our Martial Forms for Women class to begin, I watched my co-teacher, Karl, as he lead his Chen T'ai Chi class at the studio. Join Sean McCann for an introductory class of T'ai Chi. It's practice has a calming and relaxing effect on the mind and body. A Sunday-morning visit to a park in Beijing included an invitation to join a group of women practicing T'ai Chi. T'ai Chi Ch'uan combines movement with breathing to produce a strong, flexible, and well balanced body. McCann is a student of t'ai chi ch'uan and Chinese Medicine. The philosophy of t'ai chi ch'uan is that, if one uses hardness to resist violent force, then both sides are certain to be injured at least to some degree. Even if you've never practiced t'ai chi before, you've probably seen other people making the graceful, flowing movements that define this martial art. Not in any sort of dramatic way, just … stood in my office, wondering whether to start or not. You've probably seen people practicing T'ai Chi on TV, in a movie, or even locally, in a park or at the botanical garden. Many of the ancients also religiously practiced Qigong and T'ai Chi for rejuvenation and longevity. It was a sacred and secret practice until about the 1960s when much of this information started to become public in the West. It's been fifteen months of daily tai chi, and I came quite close to quitting this morning.
